Abstract

Chicken feather waste containing keratin protein has been recommended as an alternative source of nutrition that can be used for animal feed, the cosmetic industry and the fertilizer industry. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of NaOH concentration on the quality of chicken feather hydrolyzate. The study was conducted by optimizing the process of hydrolysis of chicken feather waste with an alkaline method using NaOH (ratio 1: 6) with variations concentration of 5%, 7.5% and 10% for 4 hours at a temperature of 80ºC. The most optimum determination of chicken feather hydrolysates yield is done by total protein analysis using the Kjeldahl method, amino acid analysis using Amino Acid Analyzer (AAA) and identification of protein profiles using the Static light scattering (SLS) method. The results of the optimization of the hydrolysis process can be concluded that the chicken feather hydrolyzate with a solvent concentration of 5% NaOH showed optimum results with a yield of 70.24%, total protein 62.66%, total free amino acids 39.126% and a protein molecular mass with SLS method show result of 4.31 kDa. Keywords :Amino acid, chicken feather, hydrolysis process
