Abstract
Grape seeds are known to contain high phenolic compounds. The content of these compounds has the potential to be antibacterial agents. Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes are commensal bacteria on human skin that can be opportunistic. Both of these bacteria are classified as Gram positif bacteria which can cause acne. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol and n-hexane extracts from grape seeds against S. epidermidis and P. acnes. Grape seeds were obtained from fresh grapes purchased at The Kramat Jati Central Market, East Jakarta. Grape seeds extracts were prepared by maceration method using n-hexane and 70% ethanol as solvent. The antibacterial activity test was carried out using the disc diffusion method on Mueller Hinton Agar media with a concentration of 5%, 10%, 20%, and 40%. The results showed that n-hexane and ethanol extracts of grape seeds could inhibit the growth of S. epidermidis and P. acnes at concentrations 5%, 10%, 20%, and 40%. The ethanol extract had greater inhibition zone than the n-hexane extract, both in S. epidermidis and P. acnes.
